The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) Undergraduate Thesis Competition, an annual initiative organized by the IEEE SPS Chapter of Sri Lanka, marked its second edition in 2024. Hosted at SLTC Research University, Padukka, this prestigious event provided undergraduate students and budding researchers across Sri Lanka with a platform to showcase their signal processing expertise.

Launched in 2023, the competition invites participants to present their undergraduate theses in a poster format to an esteemed panel of experts. This interactive format not only highlights innovative ideas but also facilitates valuable feedback, empowering students to refine and advance their projects.

The 2024 competition was proudly conducted in collaboration with the Centre for Telecommunications Research (CTR) at SLTC Research University. Beyond the thesis presentations, the event featured a thought-provoking panel discussion on “Telco AI: Bringing AI into 5G and Beyond.” Distinguished experts from SLTC Research University, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and the University of Moratuwa shared their insights on how artificial intelligence is transforming telecommunications, particularly in the era of 5G and beyond.

This year’s IEEE SPS Undergraduate Thesis Competition was a testament to Sri Lanka’s growing talent pool in signal processing and telecommunications. The event underscored the importance of fostering innovation and collaboration to address emerging challenges and opportunities in the field.
